Shawniece Wilmore was recently diagnosed with Medullary Renal Cancer, which is a rare kidney cancer. Just three months ago she was a 23 year old senior, enjoying her last semester of college at Jackson StateUniversity. She eagerly volunteered in the community, providing counseling to children as a Social Work major. As a proud Alpha Kappa Alpha woman, she was looking forward to a bright future in Social Work with a BSW degree to be awarded in December. Shawniece had no idea there was a deadly rare cancer growing inside her body. Initially, she had a backache and was treated for a UTI which seemed to never go away. Because the symptoms did not dissipate, a friend advised her go to the hospital as the antibiotics were not getting rid of the UTI infection. After several ER visits, biopsies, and PET scan she was told she had a rare form of cancer called Medullary Renal Carcinoma. This is when her life as she knew it changed. It is like a silent killer growing in your body with no known cure. Even scarier is symptoms don't present themselves until it is virtually too late. Additionally, there are no recommended preventative/diagnostic measures in place. Shawniece is now dealing with the diagnosis of Stage IV Medullary Renal Cancer. Her diagnosis is grim; as the treatment options are few. She is being treated with chemotherapy, however once the cancer has metastasized the effectiveness of this option is limited. In her case the cancer has metastasized, so we are TAKING ACTION NOW in hopes of building AWARENESS so no other family has to go through the pain and suffering of this disease. The goal is to put a face to this awful disease. Together we can bring Awareness in hopes to ultimately eradicate this disease. In raising funds, research and development can occur. Most importantly screenings are needed for those that carry the sickle cell trait. A simple ultrasound can be used to detect Medullary Renal Cancer. Early detection is KEY!! Please go on this journey with us to beat Medullary Renal Cancer.
