KC Film Makers Document Local Black History for Future Generations
Film makers Rodney M. Thompson and W. Stinson McClendon have chronicled Kansas City African American history for most of their professional careers. Their newest documentary, “I Remember 12th Street” will have a virtual “red carpet” screening on Friday,
February 26 at 6:30pm followed by a Q&A session moderated by Dr. Carmaletta Williams, Executive Director of the Black Archives of Mid-America. On-line tickets to access the film screening and discussion are available on EventBrite.com at no charge.
From the 1930's to the 1960's, Kansas City's 12th Street, was a thriving commercial and entertainment hub, with retails shops and service businesses, "mom and pop" grocery stores, neighborhood restaurants and nightclubs. As told through first-hand accounts by people who lived, worked, and "played" along the 12th Street corridor, the documentary shares an intriguing story of not just a street, but a place that sustained and shaped Kansas City's African American history.
